India has repeatedly raised the issue of Khalistani violence aimed at Indian nationals and also diplomats with Canada, Australia, the UK and the US.The government believes some of these countries, particularly Canada, have not done enough to rein in Khalistani activists who have actively worked to target India.
Canadian authorities have often invoked the freedom of speech argument to justify their inaction against Khalistanis who put out death threats against diplomats and followed up the provocation by publicising their photographs.
Earlier this year, at the height of diplomatic tensions, India expelled dozens of Canadian diplomats by citing the principle of parity. Sources, however, accused the expelled diplomats of having engaged in anti-India activities.
