The Globe and Mail quoted three anonymous sources as saying the suspected killers never left Canada after Nijjar’s killing and have been under police surveillance for months.Sources said police will explain the alleged assassins’ involvement and that of the Indian government when charges are framed.
Canada accused India of having a role in the killing of Nijjar, designated a terrorist by India in 2020, but hasn’t so far, according to Indian authorities, shared any evidence or information to back its claim. Nijjar was gunned down outside a gurdwara in British Columbia in June.
Ottawa believes its case has been strengthened by US indictment of an Indian for plotting the foiled assassination of another Khalistani leader, Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, allegedly at the instance of an Indian official, but India has made a distinction between the two allegations, calling Canada’s an unsubstantiated claim while saying the US has given specific inputs.
“The Globe is not identifying the sources because they were not authorised to discuss national security and police matters. It is not known whether the Royal Canadian Mounted Police are expected to arrest any suspected accomplices in the slaying,” said the report, recalling the Washington Post report in September, citing video clip and witness accounts, that six men and two vehicles were involved in Nijjar’s killing.
