What do we know about the cases?
The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) says influenza A (H5) has been detected in two people who had recently worked on an infected poultry farm in England.1 Neither experienced any symptoms of avian influenza and both have since tested negative on polymerase chain reaction swabs. The first person is likely to have had contamination of the nose from inhaling material on the farm. The second person is thought to be a more complicated case and it is not yet clear whether they also inhaled the virus while at work. These aren’t the first human cases in the UK.
