Lucky Ali’s mesmerising voice has been a staple in the hearts of millions, whether through his indie anthems or unforgettable Bollywood tunes. He kicked off his career during the indie pop craze with his iconic album Sunoh and made a smashing Bollywood debut with the classic “Na Tum Jano Na Hum” from Hrithik Roshan’s Kaho Na Pyaar Hai in 2000. Though he flirted with acting in Sur, music was always his true calling. But in a surprising twist, after serenading music lovers with Safarnama from Tamasha in 2015, Lucky Ali decided to step away from Bollywood, leaving fans wondering why. He, however, came back for Tu Hai Kahaan from Do Aur Do Pyaar this year.
As the singer turns 66, let us revisit his bold decision to step back at the height of his fame. Despite his success, Lucky Ali gradually stepped away from Bollywood. He felt that the industry had changed, with modern movies lacking inspiration and having a negative influence on society. According to him, recent films promoted violence and greed, which conflicted with his personal values. He chose to stay away from Bollywood, preferring to maintain his distance from an environment he felt had become disrespectful.
In an earlier interview, he had said, as quoted by India Today, “Iss jagah mein badtameezi bahut hai (This place has a lot of disrespect). Bollywood has changed. The movies which are being made these days are lacking inspiration and I think there is nothing to learn from such movies.”
He had also expressed his dislike for the films being made in the industry today. He had said, “This generation’s movies are leaving a bad impact on society. People are getting violent as they are inspired with what is being showcased in the movies. I believe less patience and more greediness is being promoted through movies.”
