VARANASI: The MP-MLA court here acquitted BSP MP from Ghosi Atul Rai on Saturday for the alleged rape of a 24-year-old woman. But Rai will remain in prison in connection with other cases.
The woman and her friend, the prime witness in the case, had set themselves on fire in front of the Supreme Court on August 17, 2021, alleging delay in justice. Both of them died later.
Atul Rai’s lawyer Anuj Yadav told TOI that the court did not consider the evidence produced by the complainant as reliable. “The evidence produced by the defence was accepted and Rai was acquitted,” Yadav said. “The prosecution produced nine witnesses while 13 were lined up by the defence,” he added.
“Those who gave shelter to the complainant were also examined as witness to prove how the charge of rape and fraud were framed against Atul Rai in a well-planned conspiracy,” Yadav said.
