Importance of Til Chauth
The importance of the day and vrat is mentioned in the Bhavishyottara Purana. It is also known as Vakratunda Chaturthi.
People who cannot observe all the Sankashti Chaturthi Vrat in a year can observe this Chaturthi Vrat. They will get the same benefits as observing all the 12 Sankashti Chaturthi in a year.
How is Til Chauth Vrat Observed?
It is a complete fast from morning to evening.
The fast is broken after sighting the moon.
Visiting Ganesh temples and chanting Ganpati Mantra is a must.
Donations include Til and other food items made using Sesame or Til.
Puja and Offerings
Ganesh having a right side turned trunk should be worshipped on the day.
Supari and clove should be offered on the day.
Til Chauth Mantra
Ganesh Mantra – ॐ गं गणेश्वराय विघ्ननायकाय नमः॥
Chandra Mantra – ॐ श्रीं चन्द्राय सकलार्तिहराय नमः॥
The following 12-names of Ganesha should be chanted 108 times on the day:
- वक्रतुंड (Vakratunda)
- एकदंत (Ekadanta)
- कृष्णपिंगाक्ष (Krishnapingaksh)
- गजवक्त्र (Gajvaktra)
- लंबोदर (Lambodara)
- विकट (Vikata)
- विघ्नराज (Vighnaraj)
- धूम्रवर्ण (Dhumravarna)
- भालचंद्र (Balchandra)
- विनायक (Vinayaka)
- गणपति (Ganpati)
- गजानंद (Gajanand)
Food offerings
Various food items made from Til or Sesame are also distributed on the day.
Most popular delicacies include Til Wadi, Til Kutta and sweets made of til mixed with sugar or jaggery and groundnuts.
