Delta Joins the Wave of Checked Bag Fee Increases
Delta Airlines has joined the growing list of carriers increasing their checked bag fees, announcing a $5 hike starting Tuesday.
The higher fees are already showing on Delta’s website, where a small notice says “Updated Bag & Travel Fees“. It then takes you to the “Baggage & Travel Fees” page where the new prices are posted.
The fee increase applies to both the first and second checked bag on most domestic and short-haul international routes. However, Delta SkyMiles Medallion members and first-class passengers will still enjoy complimentary bags. Additionally, if you have an eligible Delta SkyMiles American Express Card, you receive your First Bag Free on Delta flights booked with your Delta SkyMiles Amex Card. The benefit extends to up to 8 travel companions, who must be listed on the Card Member’s reservation — for a total of 9 passengers.
The new rates are $35 for the first checked bag and $45 for the second, marking Delta’s first baggage price adjustment since 2018. The airline states that this move is essential to keep up with industry cost fluctuations.
It follows recent announcements from American, United, JetBlue, and Alaska Airlines, all adjusting their checked baggage fees this year.
Delta Air Lines noted that the increased fees do not affect tickets purchased before this adjustment. So you will only pay the higher bag fees if you book a flight starting March 5, 2024.
