The new Congress government in Telangana has addressed some of the demands made by gig workers, including providing a 5 lakh health insurance. Gig workers’ associations are also demanding a special legislation to protect their interests, citing the example of Rajasthan. The government has started a process to identify and register gig workers through an online platform. The estimated number of gig workers in the country is 77 lakh, and it is projected to reach 2.35 crore by 2029-30 according to Niti Ayog.
