Coimbatore: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday inaugurated the much-awaited multi-speciality hospital of the Employees State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) on Pooluvapatti Ring Road in Tirupur through videoconference.
Modi had laid the foundation stone for the 100-bed hospital and 32 residential quarters for the employees on February 10, 2019. The hospital was funded by the Union labour and employment ministry.
“The buildings were constructed at a cost of ₹82 crore. The hospital will cater to the needs of around 20 lakh insured employees and their family members in Tirupur and Erode districts. Earlier, they had to visit the ESI hospital in Coimbatore for treatment,” said M Karthikeyan, deputy director, public relations, ESIC sub-regional office, Coimbatore.
Another official said the people from the two districts were depending on the two ESIC dispensaries in Tirupur city in the absence of a hospital in the region. “For any advanced medical intervention, we were referring them to the ESI Hospital in Coimbatore or the government hospital in Tirupur.”
In 2012, the ESIC had purchased 7.46 acres from the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department for the project, which was stalled for more than nine years because of legal hurdles associated with the land. The construction of buildings started only in 2021.
Modi also inaugurated the revamped microbiology section of the food laboratory in Coimbatore on the day. An official with the state food safety department said the microbiology section was started in 2013 to analyse microbiological parameters in the food samples. “Now, the facility has been upgraded under the central sponsored scheme at a cost of ₹4.63 crore.”
He said the laboratory was equipped with the latest equipment. “It will function with a trained microbiologist and paramedical staff. The samples will be processed in unidirectional flow to get accurate results, while avoiding contamination.”
