Bengaluru: Professional networking site LinkedIn has rolled out an identity-verification feature in India through HyperVerge, a third-party service that leverages DigiLocker to verify credentials. India is the second market after the US to introduce verification based on government issued IDs.
The verification service is available for those with a valid Aadhaar number and an India phone number and will be shown on users’ LinkedIn profiles.
LinkedIn country manager Ashutosh Gupta told TOI, “With nearly a billion members around the globe using LinkedIn to connect, seek employment and share knowledge, we recognize the paramount significance of safety, trust, and authenticity on the platform. Therefore, we are excited to introduce the new identity verification feature for our over 100 million members in India.”
Gupta said while the verification process for use on LinkedIn is voluntary, being verified could enhance a member’s credibility and open doors to new opportunities. The feature is free for all its members in India.
Asked how it’s different from the competitors who are in the verification business, he said, “Our aim with verification is not to elevate selected profiles, but to help all our members feel safe and confident when engaging on the platform. On LinkedIn, when you show that you’re the real you, you’ll have an even greater chance of finding the professional opportunities that matter to you and your community. That is why we want our members to be able to signal the authenticity of their identity and be assured that the people and opportunities they come across are credible. Moreover, verification on LinkedIn is available for free.”
LinkedIn recently launched the ID verification feature in the US through partnership with Clear, a third-party identity-verification service. This feature is available for members in the US with a valid government-issued ID and a US phone number. “While we are still in the early stage of launch, we are seeing a positive response from members who have opted to verify their identity with Clear,” he said.
