Delhi University students enrolled in undergraduate and post graduate degree courses, may now have the option to pursue a ‘joint degree’, a ToI report stated.
During the initial phase, the university intends to permit students to concurrently pursue a degree through both regular and distance modes. Additionally, there are plans for collaborations with foreign universities, providing students with the opportunity to study abroad for a semester. The proposal is set to be presented at the academic council meeting scheduled for November 30.
In December 2022, the university formed a committee to explore the feasibility of a joint degree programme in alignment with the provisions of the National Education Policy 2020. The upcoming academic council meeting will review a document proposing a “Twinning degree programme with Foreign Higher Education Institution (FHEI),” where students from the University of Delhi and its colleges can study for a semester in a foreign university and earn credits, contributing to their degree requirements.
The collaboration will focus on FHEIs within the top 500 QS World Ranking. Students may pursue one semester in a foreign university, earning a minimum of 18 credits and a maximum of 26 credits. The university is also considering the potential for joint PhD degrees following consultations with stakeholders.
Regarding the pursuit of two academic programmes, the university outlines that, in the initial phase, students can pursue one programme in full-time physical mode and another through open and distance learning (ODL)/online mode only. Those interested in enrolling in a dual degree should notify the university through the head of the department or the principal of the college.
However, it’s emphasised that students cannot simultaneously pursue two identical academic programmes, such as BCom(H) and BCom (P), even if one is intended to be completed through ODL/online mode. Students permitted to pursue two academic degree programmes concurrently must fulfill all academic requirements independently for each programme, including attendance, internal assessment, continuous assessments, submission of assignments, presentations, and examinations.
Furthermore, for research projects, dissertations, or entrepreneurship endeavors in the fourth year of the UG programme, the research theme or topic must differ for the two distinct degrees.
