Learn how to change the gradient color in InDesign in this quick walkthrough. Whether you want to remove or adjust the gradient color, InDesign makes it simple.
How to Change the Gradient Color in InDesign
Step 1
First, make sure you have an Adobe InDesign document open. It should contain the object with the gradient fill you want to change. Not sure how to make a gradient in InDesign? Check out this simple walkthrough.
In this demonstration, we’ll walk through how to change color gradient in InDesign—so we’ll edit an existing gradient, as shown below. Use the Selection Tool in the Tools panel to select the object with the gradient fill that you want to modify.
Step 2
With the object selected, open the Gradient panel by going to Window > Color > Gradient.
In the Gradient panel, you’ll see a graphical representation of the gradient stops along with their associated colors. Think of gradient stops like color anchor points that make up the different parts of your gradient. For example, in my gradient, there is a color anchor for light blue and one for dark blue.
You can click and drag on any of these gradient stops to adjust your gradient. For example, if we pull the colors closer together, the transition will be harsher.
Step 3
Next, let’s change the gradient color. InDesign makes this simple. Open up the Swatches panel by going to Window > Swatches.
You can add a new color to your gradient by dragging any color from the Swatches panel to the gradient stops in the Gradient panel. In this example, I’ve added a light purple from my swatches to my gradient.
Step 4
If you want the transition from color to color to be different, you can click and drag on the small anchor point above your gradient stops. This will alter the harshness of the transitions from color to color.
Step 5
Finally, let’s look at how to change the color gradient in InDesign if you want to remove a color. Let’s say I want to change my original gradient—light blue to dark blue—into light blue to light purple. In this case, I’d want to remove the dark blue.
Simply click and drag on any of the color stops and drag down, as if pulling it off the gradient. This will remove the extra color.
