Adobe Premiere Pro is a versatile video editor. You can use it to edit video, audio, and more. Sometimes, it’s useful to duplicate these multimedia clips to use again in the same project. Fortunately, this is very easy to do.
In this tutorial, you’ll learn how to duplicate clips in Premiere Pro. We’ll look at two methods for duplicating both audio and video. When you know how to copy a clip in Premiere Pro, you can save time when you need to reuse clips. And you can avoid having to import the same content over and over again.
Let’s learn how to duplicate audio in Premiere Pro, and video too. The process is identical for both, so read on.
How to Duplicate a Clip in Premiere Pro (Step by Step)
Learning how to copy a video in Premiere Pro is easy. Let’s look at how to copy and paste a clip in Premiere Pro, using two key methods.
To demonstrate, I’ll use stock video and audio from Envato Elements. You can download these clips here and here.
Let’s learn how to copy a clip in Premiere Pro!
1. Choose a Clip to Duplicate
As you can see below, I’ve placed my video and audio on my Premiere Pro Timeline. We’ll practice the process of duplicating clips using both of these.
To duplicate a clip in Premiere Pro, begin by choosing the clip that you want to duplicate. Let’s start with the video. To select it, simply click on the clip once. You’ll see a pale gray border around the edge of the clip. This indicates that you have the clip selected.
2. Duplicate the Clip
To see how to duplicate a clip in Premiere, the workflow will vary slightly if you’re on Mac or Windows. To duplicate a clip on Mac, hold down the Option key on your keyboard. And if you’re using Windows, hold down the Alt key instead.
3. Position the Duplicate Clip on the Timeline
Holding down the appropriate key, drag your cursor across the Timeline. If you’ve selected a video clip, move onto one of the video tracks in the Timeline. These are labeled V1, V2, V3, and so on. Audio tracks are A1, A2, A3, etc.
Place the duplicate clip wherever you want on the Timeline. Most often, you’ll place it on a different track like those listed above. Or, you can place the same clip later on the same track. Drag it into place, and then release your cursor.
Just like that, you’ve learned how to duplicate clips in Premiere Pro. You now have two copies of the same clip in your project.
How to Copy and Paste a Clip in Premiere Pro
Optionally, you can also copy and paste clips in Premiere Pro. The end result is the same as using the Option/Alt key command.
Let’s learn how to copy and paste a clip in Premiere Pro.
1. Copy a Clip
To copy a clip in Premiere Pro, click on a clip in your Timeline. Then, press Command + C on your keyboard, if you’re using Mac. On Windows, press Control + C.
You’ve copied your clip to the Clipboard. Now, it’s ready to paste!
2. Paste a Clip
To paste your clip, find the Playhead in the Timeline. It’s the vertical blue bar. Drag it across the Timeline to choose where to paste your clip.
Be sure to move the Playhead to a spot that doesn’t overlap with the clip that you’ve copied. Otherwise, Premiere may trim out a portion of the original clip.
With the Playhead moved away from the original clip, press Command / Control + V on your keyboard. Your copied clip pastes. Now, you can drag it to a new spot on the Timeline, just like we did earlier.
