Found a new typeface and need to know how to add fonts to Cricut Design Space? Or maybe you’d like to expand your Cricut font library with custom fonts.
In this tutorial, we’ll walk through how to add fonts to Cricut and how to use your newly installed Cricut font.
What You’ll Need
We’ll use the Imani Serif Handwriting font to show you how to add fonts to Cricut Design Space. Feel free to download it to follow along; you can also use any other font you prefer.
When you’re looking to download fonts for Cricut, remember to consider your project. For example, thin fonts might be nice for drawing, but not all that great for cutting.
1. How to Upload Fonts to Cricut
Step 1
Before showing you how to upload fonts to Cricut, let’s begin by discussing how fonts work in Cricut Design Space.
Open up Cricut Design Space on your computer. It’s free software that you can download and install, on Mac or PC, that works with your Cricut machine of choice.
Here’s what the Home Screen looks like in Cricut Design Space.
Step 2
To access our Cricut Design Space fonts library, click to create a New Project. We can click on the icon at the top of the screen or in the bottom area, where we can find our project history.
Step 3
Looking at our project, it can be overwhelming to consider things like how to upload fonts to Cricut or how to download fonts to Cricut. Where are the fonts? It can be a little confusing at first when you want to know how to add fonts to Cricut, because it looks and acts like its own special (and sometimes hidden) library.
Click on the Text Icon on the left to get started.
Step 4
Before we can edit text or experiment with our Cricut font choices, we’ll need to add some text. With the Text Tool selected, click to begin, and type any sample text you would like. Any text here will do. Notice that this initial box is just for typing.
Then, Cricut Design Space renders our text for us.
Step 5
Now, with our text placed, make sure to click on it to select it. If the text isn’t active, we won’t see our text options at the top of the screen. Here’s what it looks like when your text is selected.
Step 6
With your text selected, take a look at the upper part of the screen. Here, we can change the font itself, the font size, the letter spacing, the curve, and more.
Again, this will only be visible if your text is active.
Step 7
Click on the Font dropdown, highlighted below.
Step 8
Clicking on the Font dropdown gives us the following Cricut Design Space Fonts window.
Here, we can take a look at our available fonts for Cricut Design Space. Most of the ones listed here are part of Cricut’s font library. We can purchase additional fonts within Cricut Design Space too.
Step 9
However, your available fonts here rely on two sources: the Cricut font library and your System Fonts. The Cricut font library is native to Cricut Design Space, while your System Fonts are native to your computer.
You have three options when it comes to your Cricut font library:
- the default Cricut font selections, which come with your Cricut machine
- premium Cricut font choices, which you can purchase individually or via Cricut Access
- System Fonts, which give you the freedom to download fonts for Cricut in any style you’d like
If you look at your font selections, you can toggle between All, System, and Cricut fonts. You can also search for your font by name in the Search Fonts bar.
Let’s turn our focus to System Fonts—how to download them, how to install them, and how to get them visible in Cricut Design Space.
Now you know how to upload fonts to Cricut! You’ve discovered that adding fonts to Cricut Design Space is easier than you think. Moving on.
2. How to Download Fonts for Cricut
Step 1
If you’ve never downloaded a font before, it’s not very complicated. Like many other types of documents, fonts are normally one file (or a collection of files, if a font comes in more than one format or variation). Here are some of the common file formats to look out for:
- TTF (TrueType Fonts)
- OTF (OpenType Fonts)
TTF files are a great choice for all-around font usage. OTF is often a preferred file type for designers, as it can include a host of additional content and information, such as alternates, glyphs, and ligatures that can make for more typographic options.
Choose whichever you prefer. Both will work as fonts for Cricut Design Space.
Step 2
To download a font for Cricut, however, make sure you’ve saved it to your computer. Your font will either be a single file or a compressed file that you’ll need to open and extract.
Step 3
Never installed a font before on your computer? Check out these free tutorials from Envato Tuts+. They will walk you through the process for either PC or Mac.
Step 4
But if you return to Cricut Design Space, at this point, you won’t see your newly installed System Font. What gives?
Make sure to close Cricut Design Space. It needs to reload your system fonts. Make sure to save any open work you’d like to keep, before closing the software.
Step 5
Once you’ve closed Cricut Design Space, open it back up.
Open an existing project or start a new one. Then, either select some text or use the Text Tool to place some. Then, we can once again access our text options in the same way we did before.
If you have a lot of fonts installed, you can make it easier to find your favorite font for Cricut by typing its name into the search bar, highlighted below. The font I used is called Imani Serif.
Step 6
Now, when we check our Cricut Design Space fonts library, our new custom font addition is listed here for use. We’ve successfully installed and accessed a custom downloaded font for Cricut.
