All We Imagine As Light wins the prestigious Grand Prix Award at Cannes

Director Payal Kapadia’s film All We Imagine As Light scripted history as it won the Grand Prix Award at the 77th Cannes Film Festival this year. The film bagged the second most prestigious prize after the Palme d’Or, during the closing ceremony of the festival.

The screening of the film received an eight-minute standing ovation from the audience. The Malayalam feature follows the story of how a trip to a beach town gives two nurses a chance to find space for their desires. Set in the city of Mumbai, the protagonist nurse Prabha’s routine is thrown into disarray when she receives an unexpected gift from her estranged husband. Her younger roommate Anu is trying in vain to find a place in the city to live with her boyfriend.

The International critics have applauded Payal for her storytelling prowess. An alumni of the Film & Television Institute of India (FTII), the director is best known for her acclaimed documentary ‘A Night of Knowing Nothing,’ which also won the Oeil d’or award at the Cannes Film Festival.
