Zoya Akhtar’s The Archies is out now on OTT. This movie marked the debut of star kids like Suhana Khan, Khushi Kapoor, and Agastya Nanda, sparking a renewed discussion on nepotism in the film industry. Defending her casting choices, Zoya expressed her perspective on the matter.
In a recent interview, Zoya delved into the debate, emphasising the notions of privilege, access, and social capital. She acknowledged the frustration stemming from unequal opportunities but suggested that targeting the inclusion of star kids in her film might not substantially alter the circumstances for those without such privileges. Zoya highlighted her own background, born into the industry, stating her right to pursue her passion and connections established by her father Javed Akhtar.
Addressing the nepotism accusation, Zoya clarified her stance, defining it as using public or others’ money to favour family or friends, not when utilising personal funds. She defended her right to cast individuals of her choosing, emphasising that audience reception ultimately determines an actor’s or director’s success in obtaining future opportunities.
