We’ve all been guilty of putting our feet in our mouths and saying the wrong thing. However, there are some phrases that people say that make the people who hear them internally (at least) roll their eyes and sigh.
In a recent online discussion, people shared thoughtless phrases they hate. Here are 10 of their top choices to avoid.
“People Don’t Like Me Because I Tell It Like It Is”
This particular phrase was a very popular response. One person said, “And naturally they hate it when anyone dares to tell them how it is in kind. Very thin skinned, these ‘blunt folk!’”
Another person chimed in, “This has been the case with every person that’s said those words to me in life. ‘I’m a straight shooter.’ Thanks for letting me know you are not, in fact, a straight shooter.”
Yet another said, “I can tell it like it is. I’m also able to think about whether or not what I want to say is necessary. That’s the difference between a ‘straight shooter’ and a jerk.”
“No Offense, But”
One commenter said, “No offense, but…”, just before saying the most offensive thing you’ve heard in your life. Pretty sure that everyone can agree that whatever comes after but is going to be offensive.”
Another person replied, “Ah, the cousin of “I’m not racist, but’ (proceeds to say the most racist thing you’ve ever heard).”
“I Hate Drama”
If someone uses this phrase, you know it’s time to run…far away from their drama. One lady said, “I hate drama. I have never heard someone say this, unsolicited, and not been exhausted with their shenanigans within a day.”
Another person replied, “Those of us who really hate drama feel no need to announce it. We just quietly try to bail out of the situation without getting noticed and drug back in against our will.”
One person replied that they enjoy their drama from a distance, saying, “I like people who create drama, but I keep them far enough where I don’t get involved but still can hear all about it. It keeps life interesting.”
“I’m Brutally Honest”
If someone tells you that they are brutally honest, there’s a good chance it’s not something you are going to want to hear at all. One commenter said, “In other words, “I’m going to say the harshest and most offensive thing that comes to my mind and accept zero responsibility for how it lands.”
“I’m an Old Soul”
This is a really strange thing to say about yourself if you think about it. One person said, “I like people who are spiritual but those particular people seem to be less spiritual and more full of themselves most of the time.”
Another replied, “I think of an old soul as a child who knows way more than their years and seems so wise.”
“If You Have Time to Lean, You Have Time to Clean”
If you have ever worked in food service or retail, you have heard this old standby and probably wanted to gag…or quit. One person said, “I’ve quit jobs within a week over this phrase.”
You can’t really blame them when the people who utter such nonsense usually spend their day sitting in a chair!
“I’m So OCD”
Lots of people make the mistake of saying this, but if you are really living with OCD, it can feel very dismissive and hurtful. One person said, “My colleague says this all the time and it’s really annoying. I actually have OCD and it’s a horrible condition that limits your life so much and gives you so much stress and anxiety.”
Another said, “Yeah liking your computer screen clean isn’t the same thing as having to get out of bed to check the gas knobs on the stove a certain number of times or the house will burn down.”
“I’m an Alpha Male”
Pro-tip: If you feel like you have to tell people that you are an alpha male, you must assuredly don’t come across as one.
One commenter said, “Does that actually happen? Who in their right mind would describe himself as an alpha male and be serious about it? And how do you not die laughing at them?”
“We’re a Family Here”
This is a phrase that is often said in a work setting, and it’s simply not true. We aren’t family. We are co-workers, and we are all here for the paycheck so that we can take care of our family.
One person said, “You just laid off “cousin” Bill.” Someone else replied, “And when something happens that should have your family rallying around you, like an illness or death, suddenly the only thing that matters is work.”
“You’re So Quiet”
Quiet people don’t like having the fact that they are quiet brought up to them or having other people’s attention drawn to it. One commenter said, “No no I’m not quiet or shy just don’t want to speak to you!”
Another said, “I’m not quiet, I just may not choose to talk.” If you happen to be a quiet person, keep these responses in your back pocket.
