Rafael de Cárdenas dreams up Awake NY store
During the early 1990s, downtown New York City was the bastion of cool, defined by retailers like Canal Jean Co. and Antique Boutique. Awake NY, the fashion label founded in 2012 by former Supreme brand director Angelo Baque, embodies that energy. For the just-opened Awake NY flagship on the Lower East Side, Baque tapped local architect and designer Rafael de Cárdenas, who also has nostalgic memories of that heady era. The space, previously a menswear store, honors the past with original exterior signage, old suit designer logos, and carved wood frames that crown clothing racks, but de Cárdenas invigorated it with Ratchet Strap shelving, Cini Boeri and B&B Italia furniture, and flooring fashioned out of panels sourced from a Cleveland gymnasium. Paintings and murals by local artists Alvin Armstrong and Larissa De Jesús Negrón complement a large-scale letter A crafted out of plywood and a gleaming replica of the Flushing Meadows Corona Park Unisphere, a nod to Baque’s native Queens.
