With every new generation, there comes change. This change is often the refusal to accept what the older generation may perceive as normal.
In a recent discussion online, commenters shared boomer trends millennials are shunning for good. Here are ten of their top choices.
Cable TV
How are cable companies even still in business? Most people have figured out that they can get the same entertainment by streaming what they want to watch without a hefty bill.
One person said, “Cable and satellite seem like such a money pit, paying a flat fee to have access to channels, a few you’ll watch often, some you’ll watch once in a while, the rest infrequently if at all.”
Diamonds
Many people are no longer willing to pay the monetary or ethical cost for diamonds and instead are choosing other precious stones or lab-created stones instead.
The original poster said, “I’d rather have a lab diamond to be honest, at least I’d know it was ethically sourced.”
Formal Dress For Work
Gone are the days of wearing a suit and tie for office work. Instead, workers are opting for more casual and comfortable options.
One person said, “I’m lucky enough to work in an office that has almost exclusively people in their 20s and 30s and the dress code is nearly non-existent. The company that I work for sees it as pretty unnecessary for employees to come in dressed up just to answer phone calls or emails.”
Pet Food That’s Bad For Your Pets
Millennials are paying more attention to what they are feeding their furry companions and opting for healthier foods with real ingredients, even if they cost more.
One reader said, “I think the shelf life of some pet food is like 25 years. Yes, years. What in God’s green earth can survive for 25 years that would possibly be considered edible?”
Taxi Companies
Taxis may have been a viable form of transportation in the past, but now it’s easier and cheaper to just use Uber or Lyft.
One woman said, “I’ve been sexually harassed by cab drivers, I’ve had multiple drivers spend the entire trip swearing at me because my trip wasn’t long enough to give them a big fare. I’ve never had any of those problems with Uber drivers, plus Uber is generally cheaper.”
Staying Loyal to a Job You Hate
One thing many Boomers have in common is staying in a job that doesn’t make them happy. Millennials wholeheartedly reject this notion.
One person said, “Of course we aren’t meant to love every part of our career, every day; but it shouldn’t be a miserable experience. The idea that Millennials are fickle, unfocused creatures for changing careers, or focusing on intrinsic motivators can be poisonous. Whether that means they’re busy working at a chain restaurant, to make money to go to school or open a business. Millennials are going out of their way to find careers that make them happy.”
Applebee’s
Applebee’s and casual chain dining restaurant, in general, aren’t a particular favorite with millennials.
Multiple readers mentioned Applebee’s specifically saying, “Applebee’s is where you go when you’re so lazy, you’re willing to pay others to microwave your food for you.”
Fur Coats
When was the last time you saw someone in fur? Not only do many people find them to be distasteful and unethical, but they are also really expensive.
One lady said, “The only time I’ve seen new furs for sale was at Saks Fifth Avenue and that section is gone now. Probably because a small caplet dyed an obnoxious color was still $15,000. On clearance.”
Single-Use and Unrecyclable Plastics
Given that 2025 is nearly here, it is rather irresponsible of society as a whole to continue using single-use plastics that have to be thrown away or plastics of any kind that can’t be recycled.
One reader said, “Here’s to hoping that all plastic used in packaging becomes easily recyclable. It really sucks when you want to throw plastic into recycling only to be told that they’re not recyclable.”
Music Industry
You don’t have to wait to be ‘discovered.’ Now, you can put music out on your own and let your fans find you.
One commenter said, “Thanks to the advent of things like Bandcamp and SoundCloud, people can reach a fairly large audience without ever relaying on predatory agents or shady industry professionals.”
Don’t forget about Instagram, YouTube, and TikTok. There are plenty of musicians being discovered through social media as well.
