With age comes wisdom, or so we’re told. If you look around Washington, D.C., you could argue there’s a lot of wisdom if you look at age. Many elected people are getting up there in age, making many voters want someone younger to run the country.
Even if it’s someone in their late 40s to early 60s, that would be a big step. The median age of Congress is 59, and for the Senate, it’s 65, according to FiveThirtyEight. Many would argue it’s time for those numbers to decline.
Here are 11 politicians that you could argue are too old and need to move to private life.
President Biden
At the age of 77, Joe Biden is the oldest elected President in our history. He just recently turned 81 and is running for re-election.
If he wins re-election in 2024 and serves his entire term, he will be 87 years old. You can’t believe there’s not someone out there who’s younger and can lead our country.
Donald Trump
Former President Trump agrees with Biden on one thing — that age shouldn’t matter. While theoretically true, it shouldn’t be blindly applied to politics.
Trump is 77 years old. If re-elected, he’d be the same age as Biden won when he was elected. At least on the surface, Biden is in better physical health than Trump.
Mitch McConnell
Mitch McConnell has been in the Senate since 1984. He has had recent bouts of freezing that have concerned numerous people.
Turning 82 in February, it may be time for McConnell to step aside.
Nancy Pelosi
Nancy Pelosi has long drawn the ire of conservatives. She has served in Congress for over 35 years.
Surprisingly, that’s not even half of her life. At 83 years old, Pelosi shows no signs of slowing down, but it begs the question of when she will retire.
Bernie Sanders
Another octogenarian, Bernie Sanders, recently turned 82 years old. Thankfully, there are no signs he plans on running for President in 2024.
He has served in the House and Senate for nearly 30 years in total.
Chuck Grassley
Grassley takes the top spot for oldest, currently serving, Senator. At 90 years old, he is still going strong. But it begs the question of whether he should.
There has to be someone else in Iowa that can serve as well. Grassley has been in the Senate since 1980.
Maxine Waters
Maxine Waters has been serving in Congress since 1981. She has long been in public service.
However, she’s also 85 years old. Time will tell if she plans to go as long as Dianne Feinstein.
James Clyburn
James Clyburn is thought of by many as helping Biden turn around his election bid in 2020. Clyburn has served in Congress since 1993.
He bests Biden by two years and is 83 years old.
Richard Durbin
Richard Durbin serves as the senior Senator from Illinois. Having served in the Senate since 1996 and seven terms in Congress before that, he’s approaching 40 years in service.
He just recently turned 79 years old.
Angus King
Angus King is a relative newcomer to the Senate. However, he has been in public service for decades.
The independent Senator is 79 years old and is showing no signs of stopping.
Richard Blumenthal
Replacing Joe Lieberman in 2013, Richard Blumenthal has been in the Senate for a decade. Blumenthal will be turning 78 in February. He was re-elected in 2022, so he will be 83 if he serves the full term.
With a net worth of over $100 million, he’s also one of the wealthiest members of the Senate.
