As the cliché goes, the children are the hope for the future. Thus, it is fitting to save a day just to celebrate our children. Though the dates vary in various countries around the world, the 1st of June is the day on which most countries celebrate Children’s Day.
On this day, the rights and welfare of the children is celebrated. It is also observed to promote the Declaration of the Rights of the Child which was signed by the UN in 1958. In 2000, the UN set the Millennium Development Goals.
here’s a little bit more about Children’s Day all over the world.
What is the Goal of Children’s Day?
One of the goals is to ensure that HIV/AIDS will be eliminated in the near future. In many African countries, there are still thousands of HIV victims, and most of them are children who have inherited the disease from their parents.
Children’s Day is also celebrated to uphold the needs of the children as written in the 1989 International Human Rights Treaty. These days, there are still a lot of issues concerning children that need to be addressed. This includes safety, education, health, and poverty. Though Children’s Day is celebrated every year on the 1st of June, a lot of other countries celebrate it on the 20th of November annually.
How Children’s Day is Celebrated in Various Parts of the World
Bulgaria
In Bulgaria, kids are the center of attention during this day. They are given presents similar to what they usually receive for their birthdays. The family also gathers during dinner to celebrate the gift of life given to the kids in the family.
China
In China, Children’s Day is considered a holiday for public elementary schools. In most schools, they host a range of activities. This includes cultural performances, camping trips, and many other activities for children to have fun. There are also some cinemas that offer free tickets to kids on this day. They are also given discounts in other amenities and facilities around the country.
Germany
In Germany, there used to be a different celebration for Children’s Day. This was when the country was still divided into two parts. For East Germany, Children’s Day was about fun and activities. However, in West Germany, it was far more serious. Programs were launched to promote the rights and welfare of children. With the unification of the country, this day has become a huge celebration and kids get to enjoy it as much as they want to.
India
Children’s Day is celebrated on the 14th of November every year in India. This day is also the birthday of Jawaharlal Nehru, the country’s first prime minister. He was said to be a huge fan of children. Today, Children’s Day is celebrated through performances and dances in schools. Teachers also help organize the celebrations. The government also sponsors the Children’s Film Festival to showcase movies that promote the rights of children. There are also competitions across the country that provided kids the opportunity to have fun.
Wrapping Up
World Children’s Day is UNICEF’s annual day of action for children, by children. And here at Day Translations, we’re backing the celebrations all the way by ensuring no linguistic or cultural barriers get in the way of children making their voices known!
This year, and hopefully every year after, kids will stand up for a more inclusive and equal world as they raise their voices on everything from climate change to mental health and ending racism. It’s all about addressing and changing issues that matter to their generation and getting adults on board to help create a better future for the leaders of tomorrow!
