A doctor currently serving a prison sentence for manslaughter after a botched bone marrow biopsy attempt resulted in a patient’s death has been struck off the UK medical register.
Isyaka Mamman-Aka’aba, a staff grade doctor in haematology, failed to obtain a sample from Shaheen Parveen’s hip bone at the first attempt, then tried to take a sample from her sternum. He inserted the wrong sized needle in the wrong place, missing the sternum entirely and, piercing the pericardium, causing internal bleeding. Parveen, 48, who had gone to the Royal Oldham Hospital for investigations into possible myeloproliferative disorder, died later that day.
Mamman-Aka’aba continued the attempted biopsy despite cries of pain from the locally anaesthetised patient, and the objections of her husband, who ran out of the room shouting, “He killed her. I told him to stop three times and he did not listen. He killed her.”
