After graduating he served in the navy during the Korean war and thereafter as Admiralty GP for Tyneside. He was a senior partner at Betts Avenue Medical Centre until retirement in 1994. A hard working straight talking GP, esteemed by colleagues and patients alike, he was regarded as a safe pair of hands. He was a vocal member of the local medical committee. He had an extensive hinterland of hobbies—including golf, fishing, model making, gardening, and painting—seeking perfection in everything he did. He enjoyed good health, still fishing at 90 years of age. In 2020, with typical resistance, he reluctantly agreed to move to residential care.
