Ian Peter Hine was born in in Blackpool but educated at Kent College after his family moved to Canterbury. Long spells in hospital inspired him to become a doctor, and he entered Guy’s Hospital Medical School at the age of 17. He was commissioned into the medical branch of the Royal Air Force but was later obliged to resign on medical grounds. After qualifying he held training posts in anaesthesia in Truro, Romford, and Salisbury before being appointed as senior registrar and chief assistant in anaesthesia to St Bartholomew’s Hospital, London.
