Karna Dev Bardhan (“Chandu”) was born in Jhansi, India, to Pramatha Nath Bardhan, a pathologist in the army, who rose to the rank of major general and later was the founding dean of the Armed Forces Medical College. His mother was Anima Bardhan. His father’s military life resulted in postings to many different towns. To ensure a stable and secure education, Chandu was sent as a boarder, from a young age, to Doon School in Dehradun. A lively boy, he had several near death experiences. The first was at boarding school, when he and his classmates were taken to a lake divided by walkways. Chandu noticed a small whirlpool and dipped his foot into it. He was rapidly pulled under by the strong force and only escaped with the help of his classmates and a local fisherman, who told him that he was not the only child to whom this had happened and that others had not been so lucky. This near drowning experience illustrated his natural curiosity which he later took into his clinical practice.
