In 1938, aged 12, Lola Zloczower (later changed to Owers) fled Hamburg with her mother and younger brother, Fred, to join her father. Her parents, Albert and Malca, were GPs in Hamburg. Life for Jews in Germany had already been made difficult, when in autumn 1937 after a tip-off, her father evaded capture by the SS, managing to cross the German border before making his way to England. As her parents were unable to work as doctors and had nowhere stable to live, Lola and Fred were taken into the care system, where nobody could understand German and they did not speak English.
