Margaret Jane Carswell was born in rural Assam, India, where she spent an idyllic childhood growing up on a tea estate. After boarding school in England and a spell in Canada, she qualified as a doctor from Westminster Medical School in 1962, where she met her future husband, Wilson. She worked as a junior doctor in various posts and then moved with her young family to newly independent Uganda in 1968.Her services as a medic were in great demand, and she proceeded to work for the next two decades in the outpatients’ department of Nsambya Hospital, in Kampala. Run by Franciscan nuns, Nsambya was at times one of the few functioning medical facilities in the country. Often forced to improvise, she treated a wide variety of illnesses and ailments.
