Ray William Newton was born in Cumberland and attended Cockermouth Grammar School before attending the University of Edinburgh Medical School. He spent his early career in general practice, followed by an attachment to the poisons unit at Edinburgh Royal Infirmary. He arrived at the brand new Ninewells Hospital in Dundee in 1974 as a registrar, expecting to move back to Edinburgh within a couple of years, only to stay in Tayside for the rest of his life, when he retired in 2002 as consultant physician, honorary professor at the university of Dundee, and postgraduate dean.
