The National Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission (NCDRC) has exonerated a Liver Transplant and Hepatobiliary Surgeon, Medanta Institute of Liver Transplantation and Regenerative Medicine, and Medanta The Medicity, Gurgaon against a complaint of negligence in treating a liver cancer patient. It was alleged that the surgeon never removed the cancer cells, it spread to the spine and subsequently, the patient died.
Dr S M Kantikar, Presiding Member, NCDRC clarified that it was a case of recurrence of Hepatocellular Carcinoma (HCC) and not due to any residual tumour, for which the surgeon was not liable.
