New York gynaecologist Robert Hadden, 64, who sexually abused hundreds of patients over decades at two of Manhattan’s most prestigious hospitals, has been sentenced to 20 years in prison by a federal court.
Hadden was convicted of four counts of trafficking women across state lines, but Judge Richard Berman said that credible evidence had been presented in the trial showing up to 310 instances of sexual abuse involving 40 patients, including several aged under 18. A probation report had identified approximately 245 victims in total, said Berman, with some cases dating from the 1980s.
The limited federal charges were necessary because most of Hadden’s victims took their complaints to New York state authorities, but in 2016 Manhattan district attorney Cyrus Vance Jr offered Hadden a plea deal that allowed him to escape prison time.
