Despite humanity’s constant evolution, time remains a terrifying constant: a grim reminder of our mortality, and the final frontier that no living thing can overcome. Christopher Nolan’s fascination (and borderline obsession) with time can be seen in every aspect of almost every movie he’s ever made.
Today, as I patiently wait for Oppenheimer to release and for Cillian Murphy to finally get his due, of being Nolan’s lead for the first time (hopefully it’s Hardy next), I try to understand how Christopher Nolan uses “time” in his films.
Inception – Time is an Illusion
Through intricate time loops and dream levels, the film explores the concept of perception and constructed illusion.
The Dark Knight – Time is Injustice
He uses the element of time to depict the persistence of injustice, as the passage of time reveals the cyclical nature of corruption and the ongoing battle between chaos and justice in Gotham City.
