Bus shelters with living roofs have been installed throughout the streets of Sunderland in a bid to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and create a greener urban environment.
In partnership with Clear Channel, a street maintenance company, Sunderland City Council has installed several new living roof bus stops, commonly referred to as ‘Bee Bus Stops’. Each roof has been designed with a mix of native pollinator attracting wildflowers.
Councillor Claire Rowntree, Sunderland City Council’s cabinet member for clean, green city, says: “These new living roof bus shelters are just one of the ways that we are supporting important pollinators like bees and moths, which face threat due to loss of habitat but are so important for our environment. This goes hand in hand with planting wildflowers in our parks and cemeteries to support these habitats.
“Now we’re in summer, the bee bus stops are in full bloom and they are also looking beautiful and brightening up the city’s streets.”
The council will continue to partner with Clear Channel with the aim of installing 90 living roof bus shelters throughout the city.
