A ‘neglected’ and ‘inaccessible’ flood meadow in Kettering has been reconnected to the nearby river, creating a habitat for the local wildlife.
The Slade Brook, owned by theme park Wicksteed Park in Northamptonshire, has been reconnected to the River Ise in a £150,000k project.
The previously uninhabitable wetland will now become a valuable and more ‘diverse’ habitat for the local wildlife, improve the biodiversity of the surrounding area and alleviate pressure further upstream, becoming another flood defence.
Robert Hunt, director of Wicksteed Park, said: “After many years of neglect the park, working alongside many partners, we’ve worked to reinstate many of the historic landscape features within the estate.”
The wetland was previously disconnected in the late 1800s to coincide with a railway line.
