Directed by Jeo Baby, The Great Indian Kitchen (2021) starring Nimisha Sajayan and Suraj Venjaramoodu received critical acclaim. The Tamil remake of the film, titled the same, features Aishwarya Rajesh and Rahul Ravindran in the lead roles.
The film follows the story of a newly-married woman. Though she is a dancer by profession, she is restricted to the cramped kitchen space, serving her husband and father-in-law. Her in-laws force her to work continuously at home and do not allow her to find a job. For instance, they have gas stove and washing machine at their house but her father-in-law insists that she uses firewood to cook and wash clothes by hand. The Great Indian Kitchen portrays the struggles faced by women in Indian households.
The Tamil trailer has a different style but a few scenes hint that the core sequences of the original remain intact. R Kannan of Settai (2013) fame has helmed the film and Jerry Silvester Vincent has composed the music. The Great Indian Kitchen Tamil also stars Yogi Babu, Kalairani, and Poster Nandakumar.
