In the run-up to promoting his latest rom-com, ‘Anyone but You,’ Glen Powell found himself navigating the tricky waters of a real-life breakup with ex-girlfriend Gigi Paris. It wasn’t the ideal backdrop for the promotional tour alongside co-star Sydney Sweeney, but Sweeney turned it into a strategic move.
“I’ll give all the credit to Sydney. She’s brilliant, and I don’t have the mental capacity for this,” Powell acknowledged. He praised Sweeney’s brilliance and chemistry, emphasizing her pivotal role in bringing attention to the movie, a significant rom-com studio comeback.
As rumours of Powell’s breakup with Paris surfaced during promotional activities, the spotlight shifted to the growing closeness between Sydney and Glen on the red carpet. The buzz escalated after their cosy appearance at CinemaCon in Las Vegas, unveiling movie footage.
Amidst the speculation, it’s revealed that Sweeney, committed to her fiancé Jonathan Davino since 2018, was engaged in March 2022. Despite concerns about her relationship, Powell noted that Sydney’s strong bond with Davino made it easier for her to navigate the rumours with indifference. Powell, on the other hand, found it challenging due to the real breakup he was going through during the promotional tour.
“Sydney’s in a committed and wonderful relationship, and she’s very happy, making it a little harder for me,” Powell explained. Despite the personal challenges, Powell, also the film’s executive producer, showered Sweeney with admiration, commending her impressive marketing sense and on-screen charisma.
Even as late as 21st December, just a day before the movie’s theatrical premiere, Sweeney continued to play with the rumours. Speaking to Glamour, she expressed her nonchalant attitude towards the gossip, highlighting Powell’s greater difficulty in handling it. Sweeney attributed the drama to the media’s penchant for creating stories, emphasizing her usual discretion about her relationship.
Amid personal ups and downs, the duo’s on-screen chemistry and Sweeney’s strategic approach ensured that ‘Anyone but You’ made waves on the big screen.
