A new album featuring a 1961 set from John Coltrane and Eric Dolphy has been announced. Its tracks include music recorded during Coltrane’s month-long Village Gate residency with a quintet featuring Dolphy, McCoy Tyner, Reggie Workman, and Elvin Jones. The session, long thought lost, was recently unearthed from the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts’ sound archives. Evenings at the Village Gate is out July 14 via Impulse! Records and UMe. Hear the set’s recording of “Impressions” below.
Evenings at the Village Gate includes recordings of “My Favorite Things” and “Africa.” The new release comes with essays by two people in attendance for the Village Gate residency, Workman and recording engineer Rich Alderson. Historian Ashley Kahn, Branford Marsalis, and Lakecia Benjamin also contributed writing for the liner notes.
