Vivian Ward might have dreamt of a fairytale ending, but according to Julia Roberts, the aftermath of ‘Pretty Woman’ for the iconic couple takes on a more tragic note.
In a recent interview with CBS Mornings, the actress shared her imaginative take on the lives of some of her beloved characters. Brace yourselves – the fate of Vivian’s partner, Edward (played by Richard Gere), is anything but rosy.
“I reckon he peacefully drifted away in his sleep, a heart attack claiming him with a smile on his face,” Roberts revealed to Gayle King. “Now, she’s the one steering his business ship.” Edward, a stern businessman in the 1990 rom-com, had hired Vivian, a s*x worker, to pose as his girlfriend during high-profile events, leading to an unexpected love story.

While Julia Roberts dispatched Edward to the great beyond in ‘Pretty Woman,’ she was more lenient towards her ‘Runaway Bride’ character’s future. She jestingly stated, “They stick together. No tragic demise in this one. They’re in it for the long haul.”
As for her Mystic Pizza alter ego, Daisy and her partner Charles, played by Adam Storke, Roberts optimistically declared, “Fingers crossed, they’re still an item, with a bunch of adorable little ones in tow.”

Shifting to family life, Roberts envisioned her ‘Notting Hill’ character, Anna, having a handful of offspring with bookstore owner William, played by Hugh Grant. “She’s retired, managing to maintain her waistline miraculously. Meanwhile, he’s still running the bookstore, with a quaint knitting annexe now managed by her.”
Setting the record straight, Roberts confirmed that her character ‘Darby from The Pelican Brief’ was indeed romantically involved with Gray, portrayed by Denzel Washington, by the film’s conclusion. Recounting the scene, she explained, “They’re watching TV, and the journalist says, ‘Well, your source seems too good to be true.’ And he, in that Denzel way, replies, ‘She just might be.’ In slow motion, I bow my head with pink cheeks, and that says it all for me.”
According to Julia Roberts, the on-screen chemistry between Darby and Gray left no room for doubt about their romantic connection. “I believe he’s in love with her, and she’s in love with him,” she confidently asserted.
