A 23-year-old man was hacked to death by an unidentified group in Surathkal on the outskirts of Karnataka’s Mangaluru district Thursday evening.
The incident happened two days after BJP Yuva Morcha leader Praveen Nettaru, a resident of Nettaru in Bellare, was hacked to death in front of his broiler shop in the area by three bike-borne people on Tuesday night when he was heading home after closing his shop.
“At around 8 pm (on July 28), there was an incident where a 23-year-old boy was brutally attacked by 4-5 people near Krishnapura Katipalla road, Surathkal. He was immediately shifted to a hospital and was declared dead,” said N Shashi Kumar, Mangaluru Police Commissioner.
“He was attacked with a lethal weapon by a group of youths. A case has been filed at Surathkal PS. Section 144 CrPC has been imposed at Surathkal, Mulki, Bajpe, Panambur,” he added.
Following the incident, prohibitory orders banning large gatherings have been imposed in Suratkal.
“We are taking up a complaint of an eyewitness who was with the deceased during the incident and a case of murder in Surathkal PS. Keeping in view the sensitivity of the situation in important areas under Mangaluru city commissionerate, we’ve imposed prohibitory orders under Section 144,” said Kumar.
The police also requested the Muslim leaders to perform prayers at their homes. “All wine shops under the commissionerate limits will be closed for July 29. We have requested all Muslim leaders to perform their prayers at their homes, in the larger interest of the law and order of every locality. Due justice will be done quickly and fairly.”
Urging citizens not to believe in any kind of rumours being spread by any group, the Police Commissioner said, “The motive behind the incident & the identity of the culprits is being investigated… I appeal to all the citizens to not succumb to any rumours being spread by vested-interest groups.”
