NEW DELHI: The government is all set to roll out a dedicated health insurance scheme for transgender persons from September to provide a composite health package, which will also cover components of hormone therapy and gender re-affirmation surgery, which can be redeemed at all private and government healthcare facilities empanelled under the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana.
An ‘Ayushman Bharat TG Plus Card’ will be generated for verified beneficiaries. To address the specific needs of the community, in a first, cosmetic surgery has also been brought into the ambit of the cashless health cover for TG persons.
To provide the health package, minister for social justice and empowerment (MoSJE) Virendra Kumar and health minister Mansukh Mandaviya came together jointly as officials of MoSJE and signed a memorandum of understanding with the National Health Authority on Wednesday.
To mark the moment, two transwomen, Parvati Nair and Mahi Singh, received a symbolic TG health card from the ministers.
