NEW DELHI: Former Prime Minister H D Deve Gowda during his speech on Vote of Thanks on President’s address in Rajya Sabha on Tuesday made an emotional appeal to solve Karnataka’s drinking water problem. He commended PM Narendra Modi’s effort and extended support to the Bills passed by the Rajya Sabha and wished him 100 years of healthy life to serve the people of the country.
Welcoming President’s address as well as the Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Amendment Bill 2024, during which he was away from the House, “I know as a chief minister how the pollution control board was misused for their own gains. It is a welcome step by the present government.”
Raising the issue of ST status to the Kadugolla community in Karnataka, the veteran JD (S) leader delivering his speech sitting, said: “… at the age of 91 I have met several Prime Ministers. But the first time when I met in the new bhawan here we are sitting the honourable Prime Minister has given so much love and affection. On that day I requested this Kadugolla and he immediately said this is going to be cleared. I am not going to blame the social welfare minister because so many issues are confronted. Here is a particular case where Kadugolla was recommended in 2014. Even in 2022 and 2023 the BJP government of Karnataka also recommended. That’s why I will be requesting the PM tomorrow to let this issue be decided before this Parliament ends.”
Raising the water crisis in Karnataka and Cauvery water dispute, Deve Gowda said: “Drinking water is a major problem in Karnataka. I appeal to our Tamil Nadu friends to have permission that the union government construct a dam of just 30 TMC of water,” and with folded hands he further said: “I appeal to the honourable Prime Minister to see that something is done to solve the drinking problem of Karnataka. What all done by the Prime Minister I wholeheartedly support and he had done a magnanimous job. God give him a long life, let him live for 100 years and serve this nation.”
This is not the first time Deve Gowda. On January 18, during a meeting with his party workers in Belur, he said that only Modi has the qualities to lead the country in responding to the aspirations of 140 crore people. And five days prior to that Deve Gowda said: “Only Mr Modi, who is set to become Prime Minister again, can solve the problem. I will fight for Karnataka’s right in the Cauvery issue till my last breath.”
