JAMMU: Doda police on Sunday brought back from Haryana a couple who faked their death along with their minor daughter in a road accident under a well thought out plan to evade huge loans that they had taken. They are yet to be formally arrested.
Sharing details, Doda SSP Abdul Qayoom said: “Police have unravelled a fake road accident and brought back a couple and their daughter from Panchkula in Haryana who were earlier believed to have been drowned in Chenab after their car plunged into the river from NHW-244 near Gadsoo in Doda.”
On December 20, an Alto car (JK 06A-6311) reportedly rolled into Chenab River. Immediately after receipt of information, the SSP along with Doda DC ASP Bhaderwah and other senior officers rushed to the spot and supervised the rescue operation.
“During the inspection of the spot, the police team found one broken number plate of the vehicle, two ID cards, D/L and eShraman card of one Manjeet Singh, resident of village Sengoi, Bhalara in Bhaderwah, and one purse,” Qayoom said.
After hectic efforts, the rescue team retrieved the vehicle but no body or luggage was found inside it, he added.
As per evidences, on December 20, 31-year-old Manjeet Singh, his wife Sonia Devi and six-year-old daughter were travelling in the said car from Bhaderwah to Jammu and none of them was found after that. An FIR in this regard was registered in Bhaderwah police station.
The SSP said other aspects like financial condition of Manjeet and his family were also being looked into during the investigation. It came to the fore that Manjeet had taken huge loans, approximately Rs 30 lakh, from different banks and private lenders to establish his business, he said.
“After getting leads from technical sources that the accused was in Panchkula, a special team comprising Bhaderwah SHO inspector Jatinder Singh, IC PP Bhalla and PSI Ankush Kumar Sharma was constituted to search the missing persons in Haryana,” Qayoom said.
“With the help of Haryana Police, the trio was traced to village Abhaypura, Phase-1, Panchkula and were brought back to Doda within 24 hours,” he added.
