An earthquake of magnitude 6.4 hit Nepal on Friday night with strong tremors felt in northern India, including the Delhi-NCR region. As per the National Centre for Seismology (NCS), the earthquake occurred at 11:32 pm at a depth of 10 km.
It added that the epicentre of the earthquake was in Nepal, about 227 km north of Ayodhya and 331 km west northwest of Kathmandu.
The earthquake on Friday was the latest in a series of earthquakes whose tremors were felt in the Delhi-NCR area.
Just a few days ago, on October 22, an earthquake of magnitude 6.1 struck Nepal. The epicentre of the earthquake was at Dhading and the tremors of the earthquake were also felt in the Delhi-NCR region.
On October 15 too, tremors of a 3.1 magnitude earthquake which struck Haryana were felt in the Delhi-NCR region.
Before that, strong tremors were felt in several parts of northern India, including Delhi and its surrounding areas on October 3 after a series of earthquakes jolted Nepal in a matter of a few hours. The strongest one measured 6.2 on the Richter scale.
Ajay Paul, a seismologist who previously worked at Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology, said the epicentre of the earthquake on Friday occurred in the region of Nepal close to the site of the October 3 quakes. He identified the region as the central belt of Nepal, which are “active energy releasing sectors”.
He added that people should remain alert and be prepared for earthquakes in the future.
