Ahmedabad police commissioner Premveer Singh said that during investigation, Tathya was found to be a habitual offender and he has been booked in two other cases of rash driving after his arrest in the Iskcon flyover case.
Meeting the deadline fixed by Gujarat home minister Harsh Sanghavi, the Ahmedabad Police gathered evidence and submitted its investigation report within a week of the tragedy. This is probably the first time when the city police have filed a chargesheet in a serious crime in such a short period.
However, investigation in the case will continue under Section 173(8) of the CrPC (which allows police to conduct probe even after submitting the final report), inspector S J Modi informed the court.
“The cops could not bring the ‘muddamal’ (recoveries from the scene of crime) along with the chargesheet. They are likely to submit the material along with various pen drives on Friday,” sources said.
The investigation report includes statements from 191 witnesses, eight of whom had their statements recorded by a judicial magistrate under Section 164 of the CrPC.
