An FIR was registered against a Muslim cleric over objectionable comments on Jesus Christ during Christmas celebrations last year.
The case was registered at the direction of the Chief Judicial Magistrate in Ernakulam, on the basis of complaint by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Anoop Antony.
The case has been registered under Section 153A of the Indian Penal code (IPC). Section 153A pertains to promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race, place of birth, residence, language, etc., and doing acts prejudicial to maintenance of harmony.
The cleric, Waseem AL Hikami, had reportedly made objectionable remarks on the birth of Jesus Christ during the Christmas celebration in 2021.
A case was registered over the incident in Kottayam six months back. The Ernakulam cyber police registered a fresh case on June 26 and transferred it to Kottayam.
