NEW DELHI: BJP-JD(U) war of words touched a high pitch on Saturday, with both parties claiming “advantage” following recent political developments.
The JD(U) received a jolt on Friday after five of its six MLAs in Manipur joined the BJP. This comes a month after Nitish Kumar ended his alliance with the BJP and formed a fresh government in Bihar with Mahagathbandhan comprising RJD, Congress, HAM and Left parties.
BJP secured a majority of 32 seats in the 60-member Manipur assembly in the last state elections.
Former Bihar deputy CM and BJP leader Sushil Modi took a jibe at JD(U) and said “Five JD(U) MLAs joined the BJP in Manipur, the state has become JD(U)-free. Those MLAs wanted to remain in NDA.”
He also said that the ruling coalition in Bihar will implode soon.
“Lalu Prasad-led Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) will break the Janata Dal (United) in Bihar and make Bihar ‘Mukt’ (get rid of) from JD(U).” He also said that Nitish Kumar can never become Prime Minister in his life.
An angry Nitish Kumar accused the BJP trained his guns on BJP following the Manipur defections.
“Is it proper? Is it constitutional? Is it in line with established norms? They are doing so everywhere. Hence all parties must unite in 2024 for a positive mandate,” said Kumar, who is being pitched for a “national” role by his party.
He said that an united opposition could contain the BJP’s tally to under 50 in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls. Nitish is scheduled to come to Delhi on Monday, and is expected to hold meetings with several opposition parties.
“If all (opposition) parties fight together, the BJP will be bundled out for about 50 seats. I am devoting myself to that drive (abhiyan)”, Kumar said while addressing a meeting of the JD(U) state executive in Patna.
He blamed JD(U)’s drubbing in the 2020 assembly polls on “BJP’s conspiracy” and also recalled his own reluctance to continue for another term in office.
