NEW DELHI: BJP President JP Nadda on Sunday criticised Mamata Banerjee over the CBI’s seizure of arms and ammunition in Sandeshkhali, saying that people are fed up with anarchy under the West Bengal chief minister and that Trinamool Congress (TMC) under her holds sympathy for terrorists.
In a video address, Nadda questioned whether Banerjee intended to win the Lok Sabha elections by ‘intimidating and threatening the public’.Nadda expressed his party’s support for the Sandeshkhali women who were allegedly sexually assaulted by Shahjahan Sheikh, a former TMC strongman, and his associates. Sheikh, currently suspended from the TMC, is in CBI custody and also faces accusations of land grabbing by locals.
In a rally in Murshidabad, Nadda accused Banerjee of being ‘soft on terrorism.’ “We want a ‘Majboot Sarkar’ but Mamata Banerjee wants a ‘Majboor Sarkar’. We are opposed to her politics of appeasement which favours infiltrators… her government has sympathy for terrorists,” said Nadda.
The CBI seized arms and ammunition, including a police service revolver and foreign-made firearms, during searches at two premises of Sheikh’s associate on Friday. These searches were conducted in connection with the January attack on an Enforcement Directorate (ED) team by a mob allegedly instigated by Sheikh.
Nadda stated that Banerjee is making a grave mistake if she believes she can win elections through ‘intimidation and threats’, and he asserted that the ‘people will teach her a lesson’.
By fielding a Sandeshkhali victim as one of its Lok Sabha candidates, the BJP has affirmed its support for women empowerment, according to Nadda. He emphasised that the Sandeshkhali victims are not alone and have the support of the entire country.
On Saturday, Banerjee had claimed that there was ‘no evidence’ of the recovery of arms and ammunition in Sandeshkhali and suggested that the CBI teams conducted searches without informing the state police. She expressed skepticism about the operations, implying that the recovered items “might have been brought by officials of the central agency.”
Meanwhile, BJP leader Amit Malviya alleged on social media that TMC members attacked BJP’s Kasba Mondal President (in South Kolkata) Saraswati Sarkar. “No woman is safe in West Bengal. Last night, TMC goons targeted Saraswati Sarkar, BJP’s Kasba Mondal President (in South Kolkata). Mamata Banerjee is a colossal disaster as Home Minister of Bengal. Imagine if Kolkata is not safe, how bad would Sandeshkhali be. People of Bengal will respond to these atrocities,” Malviya posted on X (formerly Twitter).
