NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday addressed the closing celebrations of the 400th birth anniversary of legendary Assam war hero Lachit Barphukan, where he paid a tribute to him for defending Assam against the Mughals and preserving its culture during times of war.
The Prime Minister said the contributions of India’s greats wasn’t recognised and made a strong case for rewriting India’s history. He said that it was time to leave the history of slavery behind and urged everyone to take pride in country’s rich heritage.
“Today India has broken the shackles of colonialism and is moving forward, celebrating our heritage and remembering our heroes with pride,” he said. He added, “in every corner of the country, brave sons and daughters fought oppressors, but this history was intentionally suppressed.”

The event honouring the great hero was organised in Delhi and also attended by Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma, Governor Jagadish Mukhi, Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal
Born on 24th November 1622 in Charaideo, Lachit Barphukan was known for his extraordinary military intelligence in defeating the Mughals, thereby halting the expanding ambitions of Aurangzeb in the Battle of Saraighat.
