GUWAHATI: A 21-year-old man allegedly hanged himself in Assam‘s Golaghat district on Tuesday after uploading a video on social media blaming police for the extreme step, accusing cops of assaulting him during an immersion procession without any reason.
In the video, Ajay Duttaclaimed police picked him up while he was trying to stop a scuffle between a few youths and thrashed him.”The driver of the police vehicle punched me in the face. The traffic police personnel beat me in my stomach and on my arms badly for no fault. I did not commit any crime. I was just trying to stop the scuffle,” he said.
Dutta’s body was found hanging from a tree near a riverbank about 1km from his residence at Doloumukh village, Dergaon police station officer-in-charge Rabindra Barbarua said. “We got the information and rushed to the spot Tuesday night. But we could recover the body only on Wednesday morning after the magistrate arrived, as per protocol,” he added.
