NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his dismay on Thursday regarding the assassination attempt targeting Slovakian counterpart Robert Fico, denouncing it as a despicable and cowardly act.
Fico sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was critically injured on Wednesday after a political event, in an attempted assassination that sent shockwaves through the small landlocked nation and echoed across Europe.The 59-year-old pro-Russian leader is reportedly in critical condition, struggling for his life after being struck in the abdomen.
Outside a cultural center in the town of Handlova, approximately 140 kilometers northeast of the capital, five shots were fired.
In a post on ‘X’, Modi said, “Deeply shocked at the news of the shooting at Slovakia’s Prime Minister, H.E. Mr. Robert Fico. I strongly condemn this cowardly and dastardly act and wish PM Fico a speedy recovery. India stands in solidarity with the people of the Slovak Republic.”
