NEW DELHI: CBI is learnt to have examined former Meghalaya governor Satya Pal Malik in connection with his allegation that during his tenure as the Governor of Jammu and Kashmir, he was offered Rs 300 crore in bribes for clearing files dealing with contracts to provide health insurance to state government employees and civil work related to Kiru Hydro Electric Power Project.
Sources said his statement was recorded on Thursday by the investigating officer of the case. His gubernatorial tenure and the immunity from prosecution he enjoyed by being the occupant of a Raj Bhavan just ended on October 4 after he was not given an extension. The agency will also quiz a secretary rank official who Malik had named in his statement, the source added.
In April this year, the CBI had registered two cases and conducted searches at 15 locations after Malik claimed that he was offered Rs 300 crore in bribes to clear two files. The CBI has registered the two FIRs on the request of the J&K government on the allegations of malpractices in award of contract of J&K Employees Health Care Insurance Scheme to private company and release of Rs 60 crore in the year 2017-18 and award of the contract worth Rs 2,200 crore of civil works of Kiru Hydro Electric Power Project (HEP) to a private firm in the year 2019.
In March this year, J&K LG Manoj Sinha had said that the allegations made by Malik were serious and the administration had decided to hand over the probe to the CBI. The two cases were formally referred to the CBI on March 23.
Malik, who has now retired as the governor of Meghalaya, had claimed last year that he had received two files — one related to ‘Ambani’ and the other to an RSS functionary — when he held the same post in J&K. Since last year, Malik has been the news for his statements against the Centre made during and after the farmers’ agitation against the now-repealed farm laws.
